Yesterday, Sunday 30th March, was the European Divergent film premiere in London and lucky me had won tickets to attend exclusively the Fan Event on Leicester Square, walk the red carpet and then watch the film in the Odeon whilst being opened by some of the cast members and the author Veronica Roth! So I was over the moon when I knew I won 3 tickets to attend this fabulous day, as Divergent is one of my favourite book trilogy. Knowing I was on the same square in the same building as Veronica Roth, Kate Winslet, Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ben Lloyd-Hughes was immense..! I think I’m still on a high from yesterday.
So, what is Divergent the book:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.
You can imagine my excitement when I realised this was going to be made in a film, and now Insurgent book 2 has been confirmed to be filmed as well. I will make a different blog post about this trilogy this week. I promise!
Let me now introduce you to the fan event that happened yesterday on Leicester Square, by the entrance you showed your email that you had won the competition and got given a Divergent wristband which would give you exclusive access to it. Inside you could sit on comfortable loungechairs and with Divergent software you had to answer a couple of questions to determine what faction you are. I have to mention everyone was really into their role, the Dauntless were quite scary and very convincing and so was Erudite! Fantastic actors made the experience even better I strongly believe.
The next stop was getting your tattoo, ofcourse this stand was being manned by the Dauntless, quite intimidating bunch! I managed to get an Erudite and a Dauntless tattoo! So exciting, and no one had a clue I was actually ‘Divergent’! I tricked them all ^_^
There were many more activities, including getting your photo taken and have your own Divergent photo with Theo James, or in my husband’s case with Shailene Woodley! You could also do the climbing wall, which they tumbled upside down, jumping on the trampoline to make sure you are able to get on and off the train and a capture the flag event with laserguns to shoot your targets. There was so much going on, this was one of the best and relaxed premieres I have ever been. I was a bit limited with wearing a dress to participate in some of the activities, but it was amazing.
When it was time to queue up to get inside the cinema, we had a good view on the screens and were able to watch what was happening on the red carpet, unfortunately due to us queueing up we weren’t able to get signatures or pictures with the cast, but the whole atmosphere and all the extra’s made it worth it. Once we were at the beginning of the red carpet we had to choose our factions again, this was the seating plan within the cinema, we chosen Candor as it had a good view from our seats on the screen. Dauntless and Abnegation where at the front. Those bands were already gone, but I don’t think I would’ve chosen those anyway as I don’t like watching a film from the front. We also were given a drink and a t-shirt in your chosen faction colour with Divergent on it. So all in all the competition winners were treated very nicely and given lots of freebies to take away, not to forget the many memories!
