Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel Raphael, is used to being in control—even when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority…
They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena…
Elena wakes after a year of coma and then has the best quote of the book, she thinks she’s crushing an Angel! They are her own wings, and this is why I love this series so much… It has humour in it, it has the Alpha Male and a strong heroine in it and some gorgeous Seven from Raphael and the world around is fantastically build. It is my guilty pleasure, but one I don’t mind shouting to the rest of the world!
I liked how Elena tries to find a way to do Angel’s business but Guild Hunter business as well and trying to find a path for her and Raphael. They are trying to understand each other and also what that might mean in the future for Raphael. Will he become stronger or weaker because he’s just been made a little bit more mortal?
Elena’s struggles with her dad are emotional to read, I just want them to talk and be father and daughter again but I understand why they can’t yet. Elena is still fighting her demons from the past, that awful Slater Patalis and how her 2 eldest sisters died and then losing her mum and then dealing with the fact that because she’s hunterborn it was her ‘fault’ that the vampire paid them a visit! Of course it’s not her fault, but in those ways she’s stuck still as a child would be stuck with her emotions and not being able to deal with them.
Raphael is so in love with Elena and want her to be strong, he keeps pushing her and will sometimes uses his ‘Archangel’s voice’ to get her to understand. Her constant ‘fight’ or battle with Michaela is also written perfectly, you can really feel the jealousy pouring of from Michaela.
The fight scenes with a few of Raphael’s Seven is hilarious, they are so willing to protect Raphael and Elena that they keep pushing her buttons – and I totally love Illium and have a feeling he might be part of the Cadre of Ten one day…
The Refuge is a lovely place for the Angel’s and I loved reading about the baby angels! Sam is so cute and innocent ^_^
Lijuan’s ball and the run towards it made me want to read more and more and I only made pit stops to get cups of tea and something to eat – no one else was allowed to disturb me. What Lijuan can do and what she’s done towards the end to Elena is weird… and I’m glad Elena stood her ground! Raphael loves his Warrior Woman – that’s his Elena!
I can once again highly recommend this series – but do read Guild Hunter #1 – Angel’s Blood first 🙂 Enjoy!
