Review: Four: A Divergent Story Collection – Veronica Roth

Four Sooo I can hear you thinking – noooooooooooo not another Novella for Divergent or more pages from a different perspective. But yes – I bought this with my birthday money and I actually didn’t regret it at all! This novella gives you Four stories about Four ^_^ and in all honesty, where I had questions during Divergent how some events were linked with each other or how some people knew what was going to happen, all became clearer in these stories. Four has had more influences in the sequences of events in Divergent then many realise.

Anyways let me introduce you to the cover and the blurb:

Four Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation’s faction leader did the same. Tobias’s transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.

Newly christened “Four,” he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth comes a companion volume to the worldwide bestselling divergent series, told from the per-spective of the immensely popular character Tobias. The four pieces included here—The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son, and The Traitor—plus three additional exclusive scenes, give readers an electrifying glimpse into the history and heart of Tobias, and set the stage for the epic saga of the Divergent trilogy.

My Thoughts

I quite enjoyed this book, the 4 stories about Four. We see a bit of Four before the choosing ceremony and what impact the initiate period for him was. But also not really thinking about it when you read the first book Divergent – some of the events that has happened, Four had a massive hand in it. I can’t tell you exactly what he did or when as I don’t want to spoil things. But it did gave me more appreciation for Four then I already had.
It also makes sense why his initiates were a bit ‘out of control’ and how the rule came in place to fight for your top spot otherwise you will be ‘factionless’. Also it became clear that Jeanine was in on this plot for a very long time and that Tris and Tobias were just ‘unlucky’ or ‘lucky’ to be in the middle of the big reveal.

The relationship with his father and mother and how the rivalry existed between him and Eric, how he sees Tris through his eyes I loved it!

Veronica has done a great job in creating this world for Four, just what I was after and I know I might be in the minority here – but I really enjoyed his perspective on things.

I know it is a short review – but the book is quite short, but I can recommend this book to read after you’ve read the Divergent Trilogy or maybe just after Divergent.

Have you read this short story yet? Or are you not going to bother with this book? Let me know in the comments below!
